Tips for Destination Brides Traveling with their Wedding Gown

  1. DON’T CHECK YOUR LUGGAGE

We all know how frustrating it can be to have luggage lost when you are traveling.  The last thing you want to do is take a chance of that happening with your wedding gown.  We also caution against shipping your gown, as it could potentially be damaged in shipping or delivered to the wrong address.  Bring your wedding gown as your carry on and make sure you keep it with you the entire time.

2. CALL AHEAD

Once you book your flight, call your airline to ask what kind of plane you will be on and ask about their garment bag policies.  Chances are, they have had brides traveling with wedding gowns before, and they will be able to tell you the best way to store your dress on the plane.  Ask if there is a captain’s closet that you can potentially use.

3. PRIORITY BOARDING

Splurging on first class tickets or priority boarding is a safe way to to secure a closet that you can use to hang your dress.  If that isn’t an option, ask the flight attendant if there is an empty seat on the plane that you can lay your dress in.  If possible, sit next to the dress to make sure that it stays safe and out of the way of other passengers.

4. OVERHEAD COMPARTMENT

If all else fails, lay your garment bag on top of suitcases in the overhead compartment once it is full.  You don’t want anyone shuffling your dress around, so place it in the bin after everyone has stowed their bags.  Ask permission from fellow passengers before placing your dress on top of their luggage.  Once you explain that you are a bride traveling with your wedding gown, most people are understanding and more than willing to accommodate you.
